Cancer Epidemiology, Genes and Environment

The work conducted in the team is mainly devoted to the study of the causes of cancer, but also to the characterization of carcinogenic exposures in the general population and to the study of the prognostic determinants of cancers. One of the main objectives is to provide guidelines for cancer prevention. We are presently conducting several studies on cancers of the breast, prostate, thyroid, lung and upper respiratory tract.

Our work focuses on cancer risk associated with physical, chemical or biological exposures to the work environment (eg pesticides, organic solvents, man-made mineral fibers, endotoxins), the general environment (eg releases from industrial sites, air pollution) or lifestyle (eg night work involving disruption of the circadian rhythm, smoking, alcohol). The team's work also focuses on the links between cancer and hormonal and reproductive factors, overweight and inflammation. The study of genetic susceptibility factors that modulates the individual response (metabolic, immune or inflammatory) to these environmental factors also constitutes a research axis in its own right. The use of innovative statistical methods allows us to better take into account the multiplicity of risk factors of the studied cancers and their joint effects. This work is based on broad epidemiological studies in the general population coordinated by the team, or is conducted within national and international collaborations
