The "Health across Generations” team conducts epidemiological research essentially based on the E3N and E4N cohorts.
Using the large database and biobank of the E3N and E4N cohorts, the team investigates how societal factors as well as individual factors (such as lifestyle and exposure to chemical pollutants) could be associated with the incidence and prognosis of the major non communicable chronic diseases. The team investigates those associations throughout the life course, within families and across several generations.
Since 1990, the team has been actively following up the French E3N prospective cohort, composed of 98 995 women born between 1925 and 1950, and affiliated to the health insurance scheme of the national education system (MGEN). The team is now establishing the large E4N family cohort, including three generations of participants: the women of the E3N study and their spouses (already included), their children (inclusion 2018), and their grandchildren (inclusion 2020).
In 2020, the mega-cohort E3N-E4N will bring together more than 20,000 families adding up 200,000 people from three successive generations.
Main lines of research:
- To analyze the role of environmental and genetic factors, in the occurrence of and survival after cancer and other major chronic diseases (diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, neurological diseases...);
- To more specifically investigate the associations with lifestyle, metabolic factors (e.g. diet and physical activity), the use of hormonal treatments, reproductive factors, and early life exposure;
- To assess the relationship between chronic diseases and several biological markers (markers related to diet, hormonal status, genetic polymorphisms...);
- To study the
inheritance and the transmission of health determinants;
- To study the link between genetic and epigenetic factors, and major chronic diseases (cancer, diabetes…).
